I’m one of the strange people who love really ‘painful’ massages – the sort where your face and eyes are scrunched up like a Japanese sniper(!), and where it’s so painful, you forget to breathe (until you’re desperate for oxygen!), , and you think you can’t take any more pain but don’t want the bloke to stop.
Last week, I found a brilliant guy, Tony, runs a business called the Back Practice, in Belfast (Lisburn Road & Malone area, 385 Lisburn Road (www.thebackpractice.com). He’s a sports physio/masseur, and man, has he got strong hands…he’s so good though I’d recommend him: I’ve just got back from there now…
One of the sid effects of dodgy knees is, of course, that your ‘gait’ changes (you walk funny, in case my genteel English is not understood!! š ). Not only that, but the muscles in your thighs, calves, and lower back get totally screwed up, and lose tone, elasticity, change shape. There’s also a bit tendon (? help me here, Robert Hall!!) called the IT band (nothing to do with worship!) – Ilotibial Band, I think – here’s what wikipedia has to say about it! –
- Iliotibial band syndrome is one of the leading causes of lateralĀ knee painĀ in runners. TheĀ iliotibial bandĀ is a thick band of fascia on the lateral aspect of the knee, extending from the outside of theĀ pelvis, over theĀ hipĀ and knee, and inserting just below the knee. The band is crucial to stabilizing the knee during running, as it moves from behind theĀ femurĀ to the front of the femur during activity. The continual rubbing of the band over theĀ lateral femoral epicondyle, combined with the repeatedĀ flexionĀ and extension of the knee during running may cause the area to become inflamed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iliotibial_band_syndrome)
Forget the ‘runners’ bit in my case(!), but it’s a pretty important piece of internal body kit. I know about it only because my Aussie mate Robert is a (lunatic) ultra marathon runner. Along with my knee pain, I’ve been getting pain coming down from the glutes, so much so that I couldn’t even really sit on my left side, especially from me bum to me knee, because of pain….
Tony was gob-smacked today, having worked excruciatingly but wonderfully on my thighs and calves, then cut loose on the IT band. He’s been doing his job for 12 years, and he’s never come across anyone who’s managed to get knots in the sheath that the IT band is in – until today! Man, it was painful, but did it feel good…. so, along with my earlier blog, about Ian Andrews’ prayer, and my statement about doctors and having the utmost respect for them, a physio has helped today big time…. I’m so grateful that God gives even people who don’t know him gifts they don’t know he’s the one who gave them to them, but I’m back again for another sniper session next week…. š
